With over 20 years of experience in designing electronic systems for aircraft, Stafford Aero Technologies are experience with problems associated with electromagnetic emissions (coming from the device to interfere with other products) and immunity issues (everything trying to make the device operate incorrectly).

A general tip is that the majority of problems come from wiring and interconnecting looms. If you look at your design and think "where are the antenna?" you've already made a step towards thinking about electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and are working towards being able to apply the CE mark to your products.

Let's look at a specific example to put it in context:

• If a clock frequency of 27MHz is travelling down an unscreened cable with a total length of 93cm, it would be tuned at the quarter wavelength of the third harmonic and radiate a strong 81MHz signal.
• By simply changing the length the emission would reduce enormously.
• And this could be achieved:
  
  a) electronically - by using inductance for example or
  
  b) mechanically - by screening the cable or using a different length of cable.
